There are no sagas out there that can ever dwarf (no pun intended) the impact that The Lord of the Rings has had on popular culture for over half a century now. JRR Tolkien spent a decade writing and perfecting his tale of friends banding together against impossible odds, and his meticulous attention to detail, character and scope paid off in spades.

The three books that make up the famous trilogy have become legendary; essential volumes for every bookshelf the world over. With some of the most enduring characters in history, such as the enigmatic Gandalf and the humble little Hobbits, it is plain to see why the stories have proven to be so very enduring.

The Lord of the Rings spawned a massive industry in itself, with all manner of lesser copies being written, filmed and created over the years, but all were pale imitations of the real thing, and it wasn't until 2001 and the opening of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING as a live action movie directed by Aussie titan Peter Jackson that a definitive screen version of the books could be offered.

The films (released in the winters of 2001, 2002 and 2003) proved to be enormous hits, and a whole new generation had their eyes opened to the marvels of Tolkien's creations. They made international stars of their cast, they brought some of the most stunning visuals ever created to the screen, and they brought those classic stories to the hearts and imaginations of millions of people all over again.

The books saw an upsurge in sales once again, and there seems to be no end in sight to the popularity of this legendary saga. Long may it reign. Long may those heroes live on.
