After the (admittedly entertaining) low budget BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER feature film back in 1992, nobody could have predicted what would follow. That original movie (starring Kristy Swanson as the original incarnation of the blonde vampire slayer) was a fun bit of fluff, and largely forgotten once it had faded from screens. Its creator, one Joss Whedon, didn't give up on his feisty creation, and in 1997 Buffy began her first season as an ongoing TV character. Nobody quite knew what to make of it at first, it being a spinoff from a flop movie, but very quickly it gathered its own loyal audience all over the world, who coudn't wait to get their next fix of wisecracks and dustings.

The show made household names of Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan and Eliza Dushku. It spawned a whole culture of BTVS fans who knew every line and every story, who had filled their homes with action figures, posters, books, models, calendars and every other piece of merchandise that was offered. Buffy had not only become a hit TV show, she had become an industry. During her seven year run we met some incredible characters such as Spike and Angel, the latter of whom went on to star in his own spinoff series, which lasted for five action packed seasons.

Both shows were famous for the amazing level of verbal interplay between the characters, all of whom had strong story arcs that kept the mythos growing along with the fanbase. Characters such as Dawn and Giles became icons alongside the central characters, and the as the shows became a worldwide phenomenon, they continued to maintain the high levels of story, acting and production that they had become famous for.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer tried out so many groundbreaking ideas during its run that it became known for constantly surprising its fans. Killing the main character was one example of a bold move! Of course she came back eventually, but she was never quite the same... One highlight of the show, that will certainly go down in TV history will be the completely musical episode 'Once More With Feeling', in which the cast all sang songs after being bewitched by a musical demon. The subsequent album became a bestseller, and the world rang out with Buffy fans screaming "BUNNIES! IT MUST BE BUNNIES!!!"

While both shows have now come to an end, the characters live on in original novels, comics and graphic novels, and as the sales of DVDs and other memorabilia go to show, there is still a great appetite for all things Slayerish, and there will be so for some time to come.
